Dorset Cereals launches the Edible Playgrounds Website

Dorset Cereals has launched the Edible Playgrounds website to help schools across the UK develop their very own veggie garden in which to grow food, (www.edibleplaygrounds.co.uk).  The Company has teamed up with gardeners, chefs and education experts to create a site that will become an invaluable resource and creative inspiration for children, teachers and parents, helping them create their very own Edible Playground.

Schools can access the site to get advice on how to start a school garden, what to plant, how to encourage children to help, when to harvest and what to cook with the home grown produce.  There will also be photos, blogs, downloadable lesson plans for teachers and special offers on plants, seeds and gardening equipment to help schools create or develop their Edible Playground.

The Edible Playground project is a Dorset-born initiative that provides schools with gardening equipment, seeds, experience and information to help them establish a food-producing garden in their grounds.  The scheme was launched as a community project in May 2007 by Screen Bites: Dorset’s Food Film Festival.

“We became aware of the Edible Playground initiative last year, and we are very keen to help expand this wonderful Dorset-based project to a wider number of schools.  Our website will act as a platform to spread the message of how children can become involved in growing, tasting and cooking their own food,” says Patrick Horton of Dorset Cereals.

The Dorset Cereals team is exhibiting two show gardens based on the Edible Playgrounds theme at this year’s Chelsea Flower Show (May 19th-24th) and Hampton Court Flower Show (July 8th – 12th).

Designed by Nick Williams-Ellis, the gardens are intended to be an inspiration for schools, encouraging teachers, pupils and parents to develop small productive gardens where children can learn about and experience the thrill of growing and cooking their own food.

Note to Editors:

Dorset Cereals sources only the finest quality ingredients from around the world, and is committed to making premium cereals.  Each recipe is carefully blended and balanced and packed full of crisp flakes, crunchy nuts and soft succulent fruit.  The blending process used by Dorset Cereals ensures that the ingredients remain whole, resulting in as little ‘dust’ as possible in the pack.  Only natural ingredients are used in each of the cereals, which are approved by the Vegetarian Society and kosher.  Last year saw the complete re-launch of the Company with new contemporary packaging, which reflects the uncompromising dedication the company has to making premium cereals.
